DPSCD Foundation Receives $50K Grant from United Way to Help Families Thrive Outside the Classroom

We’re proud to share that the DPSCD Foundation has been awarded a $50,000 grant from United Way for Southeastern Michigan as part of their most recent round of community investments—totaling $5.2 million across the region.

This additional support will be used to expand the work of the Detroit Public Schools Community District’s Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department, which provides families with access to basic needs and wraparound support services that remove barriers to student success.

From food pantries and clothing closets to housing referrals, parent resource centers, and emergency assistance, FACE is often the first line of support for families in crisis. This grant helps us sustain and grow those resources—so students can focus on learning, growing, and achieving their fullest potential.

Why This Grant Matters

When students have stable housing, full bellies, clean clothes, and consistent transportation, they are more likely to attend school, stay engaged in the classroom, and participate in programs that support their personal and academic development. By investing in FACE, we’re investing in a more equitable educational experience for Detroit’s students—one that addresses the whole child and the whole family.

In The Words of DPSCD Foundation President + CEO, Kerrie Mitchell:

“At a time when families are navigating so many challenges, this support from United Way is both timely and deeply meaningful. This investment helps us expand services that meet families where they are—ensuring every child has what they need to succeed in school and beyond. United Way continues to be a true partner in this work, and we’re grateful for their belief in the power of community.”

We’re honored to be among the 90 nonprofits selected—out of more than 240 applicants—and we’re energized to continue this work on behalf of the 50,000+ students and families we serve.

Thank you, United Way, for helping Detroit students rise.
