Meet Michael Craig — special education teacher and director of the horticulture program at the Charles Drew Transition Center in Detroit, where young adults aged 18–26 with autism and cognitive disabilities are learning more than how to grow food. They're building independence, developing vocational skills, and supplying over 15,000 pounds of leafy green produce to three five-star restaurant clients. That's not something anyone else in America is doing. Thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Honda Foundation — made possible through the DPSCD Foundation — the program now features state-of-the-art hydroponic systems and specialized lighting, taking the quality of their produce to the next level.This is what happens when education, community, and opportunity grow together. Over the next few weeks, these young runners will log 25 miles at their own pace before coming together on October 18th to run their final mile at the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. The event celebrates goal setting, perseverance, and the power of community support. More than 300 Detroit public school students received FREE running shoes today at an exciting unboxing event for the Priority Health Kids Marathon! Students from six Detroit schools who registered for the marathon were gifted brand new sneakers to help them train for their 25.2-mile challenge. Kids ages 6-13 will walk or run on their own schedule and pace, building up to the big finish on October 18th when 1,000 young runners will complete the final mile together at the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.
