DETROIT’S CHILDREN MUSEUM

109 YEARS OF CURIOSITY. A NEW CHAPTER STARTS NOW.

Since 1917, Detroit’s Children Museum has sparked wonder in generations of Detroit students. Today, its doors are open again, and your gift helps keep them open.

A Detroit Treasure, Reawakened

Tucked inside a reimagined power substation on Second Avenue sits one of Detroit’s best-kept secrets: the third-oldest operating children’s museum in the United States, home to more than 2.5 million artifacts.

For over a century, this is where Detroit’s kids have dug for fossils, built with their hands, asked big questions, and found bigger answers. Now the Museum is welcoming students, families, and the community once again, with free monthly Community Days, field trips for DPSCD classrooms, and hands-on stations where science, history, art, and culture come alive.

Our students are curious. Our city is proud. And this next chapter? We’re writing it together.

What Your Gift Makes Possible

Your support sustains the people, programs, spaces, and resources that keep the Museum open for Detroit’s kids.

Hands-On Discovery

Fossil digs. STEM challenges. Art stations. The magnet table kids line up for. Operating support helps keep the Museum’s interactive exhibits maintained, engaging, and ready for every visit.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Your support helps make field trips, classroom lending kits, school outreach, and curriculum-aligned learning experiences possible. Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, the Museum plans to welcome DPSCD classrooms Tuesday through Friday, with transportation provided by the District.

Community Days for Every Family

On the fourth Saturday of every month, the Museum welcomes the community for a free day of discovery. Your support helps sustain these family experiences and keeps museum learning accessible to more Detroit children.

Preserving a National Treasure

More than 2.5 million artifacts live here, preserving stories of science, history, art, and culture. Operating support helps the Museum care for its collection and keep it available for future generations of Detroit students.

Your donation supports the staff, facilities, collection care, educational programs, supplies, maintenance, and daily operations required to keep Detroit’s Children Museum open and serving Detroit children and families.

A Place Where Detroit Children Can Look Up

Under the dome of the Museum’s 1968 Spitz Planetarium, city lights disappear and the night sky our ancestors knew comes back to life. Students encounter Native American constellation stories and learn how the Big Dipper, known as the Drinking Gourd, helped guide people seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad.

The planetarium is currently undergoing updates. When it reopens, it will once again connect science, history, culture, and imagination beneath one unforgettable sky.
