CAMP BURT SHURLY
learning Beyond the Classroom
Michigan is known for its parks, lakes, and natural beauty, and every student should have the opportunity to experience these treasures. Tucked between two lakes in Livingston County, Camp Burt Shurly is a hidden gem—209 acres of cabins, trails, and waterfront that have served generations of Detroit students with unforgettable outdoor experiences. For many, it’s their first time beyond city limits, a place where nature becomes both a classroom and a catalyst for confidence.
Since 2019, Camp Burt Shurly has been closed due to infrastructure challenges. But we’re ready to bring it back—bigger, better, and bolder than ever. The DPSCD Foundation is spearheading the effort to restore and reimagine this one-of-a-kind space, creating a year-round hub for outdoor learning, leadership, and adventure.
Transforming Outdoor Education for Detroit’s Youth
When reopened, Camp Burt Shurly will offer experiences that foster physical fitness, leadership, environmental stewardship, and community—all in a safe and inspiring setting.
Planned Upgrades Include:
- Cabin roof, plumbing, and electrical repairs
- New outdoor learning labs, science stations, and campfire classrooms
- Adventure courses: canoeing, high ropes, archery, swimming
- Year-round HVAC installation for four-season use
- Programming for leadership development, team-building, and hands-on learning
These upgrades are more than renovations—they’re investments in student potential.
Be a Part of the Legacy
We envision a future where every DPSCD student has access to nature and the life-changing opportunities it brings. With your help, Camp Burt Shurly can once again become a launchpad for discovery, growth, and joyful learning.
