Early Childhood

Early Childhood Development: Laying the Foundation for a Lifetime of Learning

A strong start can shape a lifetime. At the DPSCD Foundation, we believe every child deserves access to high-quality early learning opportunities that spark curiosity, build confidence, and support school readiness—regardless of their zip code.

For many Detroit families, economic challenges can limit access to preschool programs that lay the groundwork for success. That’s why we’re committed to increasing opportunities for early learners and helping close the gap—so more children start school with the tools they need to thrive.

We work in partnership with DPSCD to support free, research-based early childhood programs for children who turn four by December 1 of the school year. These programs foster academic readiness, social-emotional growth, and a love for learning—planting seeds that grow into long-term success.

Programs We Support

  • Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) A state-funded, research-based initiative designed to prepare four-year-olds for kindergarten through structured, developmentally appropriate instruction.
  • Montessori Classrooms An experiential, student-led learning model that encourages independence, focus, and individualized growth through hands-on exploration.
  • School-Based Classrooms Hosted in DPSCD elementary schools, these programs offer convenience for families and smooth transitions into the K–12 system—creating continuity in each child’s learning journey.

Power What’s Possible

Early childhood is one of the most important stages of development—but too many students face barriers before their educational journey even begins. When children have access to high-quality preschool programs, the results speak for themselves: improved reading readiness, stronger social-emotional skills, and better long-term outcomes. By expanding early learning access across the District, we’re helping ensure every child can enter kindergarten confident, capable, and eager to learn.

The need is great—and the opportunity is even greater. As demand for early childhood programs grows, so does our commitment to helping families find strong starts close to home. Your support helps us remove barriers, open doors, and build a stronger foundation for Detroit’s future—starting with our youngest learners.

Support this work and join us in giving more children a chance to rise.
