CBS Detroit – 300+ Detroit Students Receive Free Running Shoes for Kids Marathon

Summary

More than 300 public school students received brand new running shoes at an unboxing event in Detroit today, kicking off their journey in the Priority Health-sponsored Kids Marathon.

Training for Success

Students from six Detroit public schools who registered for the marathon were gifted free sneakers to support their training. The program challenges kids ages 6 to 13 to complete 25.2 miles—walking or running on their own schedule and at their own pace—before race day.

The Big Finish

On October 18th, 1,000 young participants will come together at the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy to complete the final mile as a group, celebrating their dedication and achievement. “For us, this is really an entry into our sport that we get these kids involved and excited so that they can grow in this sport,” organizers said. “We couldn’t be happier to grow the program to over 300 kids.”

Building Confidence Through Movement

The event does more than promote physical fitness—it empowers kids to stay active, build confidence, and experience the pride of crossing the finish line. It’s an investment in Detroit’s youth that extends far beyond race day.
