WXYZ Channel 7: Detroit Public Schools Launch Laundry Initiative to Boost Attendance

A modern front-loading washing machine is set against a tiled floor in what appears to be a laundry room. A large green industrial machine is visible in the background. The time and temperature are displayed in the bottom-right corner (5:18, 81 degrees). This setup could support the Detroit Public Schools' Laundry Initiative.

In an effort to address chronic absenteeism, the Detroit Public Schools Community District is rolling out laundry machines in all 108 of its schools. This $300,000 partnership with General Electric offers students the opportunity to wash their clothes at school, tackling a barrier that often contributes to missed days. For many students, access to clean clothes is essential for their confidence and attendance. With absenteeism rates slowly decreasing, the district hopes this initiative will further support students’ success.
