Local 4: Detroit public schools install new laundry machines to combat chronic absenteeism

A modern laundry room with purple tiled backsplash, light wood cabinets, a white countertop, and new laundry machines. There are shirts hanging on a rod, laundry baskets below the counter, and a tissue box on top of the black front-loading washer and dryer.

Detroit Public Schools Community District is putting new washers and dryers in all its schools to increase attendance.

The washers secured through a partnership with GE Appliances will serve multiple purposes, from cleaning team uniforms to washing blankets used in pre-K nap times.

The laundry machines will give all students access to clean clothes, which is a barrier to education.

The initiative is part of a strategy to give students dignity and removing obstacles to their education which helps address chronic absenteeism.

“Ensuring access to essential resources like laundry facilities goes beyond convenience; it’s about providing dignity, fostering self-esteem, and removing barriers to education,” said Kerrie Mitchell, President & CEO of the DPSCD Foundation. “This partnership reflects our commitment to holistic student support and exemplifies the power of community collaboration in making a tangible difference in our young people’s lives. Together, we are setting a precedent for how public and private sectors can unite to uplift and empower our future generations in Detroit. We are grateful to GE Appliances for their donation, partnership, and support.”

So far, half the schools have the washers and dryers on their campuses. The rest of the installations are expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

The washers and dryers are part of DPSCD health hubs which are funded through several philanthropic partnerships including Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons. In addition to laundry services, DPSCD health hubs provide other essential items and resources including toiletries, hygiene items, and food and clothing.
